This refresher course is designed for individuals who already hold the Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set qualifications and need to renew their competencies across multiple safety-critical areas to maintain current certification and ensure ongoing compliance with coal mining industry safety standards and regulations.
This comprehensive refresher skill set encompasses six essential units of competency that are fundamental to safe operations in surface coal mining environments. The course updates and reinforces existing knowledge and skills across critical safety areas including workplace communication, emergency response procedures, risk management, and compliance with work health and safety protocols.
The refresher skill set includes the following units:
- RIICOM201E Communicate in the Workplace – Refreshing effective communication skills essential for safe mining operations
- RIIERR205D Apply Initial Response First Aid – Renewing first aid competencies for immediate emergency response
- RIIERR302E Respond to Local Emergencies and Incidents – Updating emergency response procedures and incident management skills
- RIIGOV201E Comply with Site Work Processes/Procedures – Reinforcing compliance with site-specific operational procedures
- RIIRIS201E Conduct Local Risk Control – Refreshing risk identification, assessment, and control methodologies
- RIIWHS201E Work Safely and Follow WHS Policies and Procedures – Updating work health and safety knowledge and procedural compliance
As a refresher program, this skill set ensures mining professionals maintain current competency levels and stay up-to-date with evolving industry standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices essential for safe surface coal mining operations.
Objectives

Entry Requirements
- To be eligible for this refresher course, we require:
- A clear copy of your photo identification or Drivers Licence;
- A previous Statement of Attainment issued by an RTO listing that is less than 5 years old that lists all 6 Standard 11 competencies (RIICOM201E Communicate in the Workplace, RIIERR205D Apply Initial Response First Aid, RIIERR302E Respond to Local Emergencies and Incidents, RIIGOV201E Comply with Site Work Processes/Procedures, RIIRIS201E Conduct Local Risk Control, RIIWHS201E Work Safely and Follow WHS Policies and Procedures)
- Must be at least 15 years of age
- Please note wallet cards will not be accepted.
- You can obtain a VET Transcript from your USI student portal if you do not have access to your current Statement of Attainment. (Forgot your USI? / Unique Student Identifier)
To proceed with this course, students will be required to:
- Pass a language, literacy, and numeracy assessment (LLN)
If the student is required to complete the full course as they do not meet the refresher requirements, an additional assessment fee will apply for the practical training and assessment component which can be delivered at our training facility.

Credit Transfer/ RPL
If you have completed some of this course before or you have completed some units that appear in this course or you have good experience in this type of work, then you can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer. You don’t have to take up this option but it’s available upon request. Evidence will be required.
